#AsiaCup2022Final
Congratulations to Sri Lanka's cricket team for their victory at the 2022 Asia Cup. Sri Lanka defeated Pakistan by 23 runs in the final with Bhanuka Rajapaksa hitting an unbeaten 71 and Wanindu Hasaranga starring with bat and ball.
A layer of bliss for the struggling Sri Lankan people, a country of 22 million people, declared in mid-April its international debt default due to the forex crisis.
The country was enduring hyperinflation, and lengthy power blackouts and is facing acute shortages of food, fuel, and medicines after running out of foreign exchange to pay for imports since late last year.
From the horrendous time since last year for a country that couldn't even host the Asia cup, tax hikes, mountain of debt to this moment with a hattrick of wins. cricket itself is a joyous event, every single six, and every wicket brings happiness to the fans. All the credit goes to the lions (Srilankan cricket team ) they brought up a really great game and prove that nation itself can stand if they stand for their own, own their own.
Rajapaksa’s successor, Ranil Wickremesinghe, was among the first to congratulate the national team.
Hemalatha Tillakaratne, 72, said she feared the government would introduce price hikes as the country savored the rare sporting victories.
Today, they didn't force the power outage because of the game, but they will restart the power outages starting tomorrow. They may also use the victory to raise prices tomorrow," Tillakaratne told AFP.
We are pleased to have won the Asia Cup (cricket) despite the economic downturn," said Athauda.
“At a time when people are suffering, this is a relief.”
A wave of messages from the cricket world in other countries spilled over onto social media to congratulate the Sri Lankan team on their win:
A country going through so much and still winning the Asian Cup after beating the top teams. You deserve it, Sri Lanka, you deserve it all. Wonderful performance. #and PAKvsSL

Perhaps Sri Lanka did need this win more than anyone else, or at least that’s what the Lankan supporters will very strongly feel. And for a nation that was counted among the powerhouses right from the late 1990s to the early 2010s, the steep fall post-2015 would’ve been quite the bitter pill to swallow. Especially the way they would routinely get outplayed by the Indians, both at home and away, and at times even struggled to compete against teams such as Zimbabwe.
